US President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Group, which might have introduced the bloc to the brink of collapse, former NATO Secretary Basic Jens Stoltenberg has claimed.

“Look, if we depart, we depart. You want NATO, desperately. We don’t want NATO,” Stoltenberg quoted Trump as saying, noting that if the US had withdrawn from the bloc, “the alliance could be lifeless.”

Trump later reportedly made comparable remarks throughout the summit, saying the US “doesn’t want NATO” and would “do our personal factor” until European members elevated army spending to 2% of GDP. He additionally reportedly threatened to stroll out, saying, “There’s no purpose for me to be right here anymore.”

Trump’s perspective reportedly prompted fears that the bloc might disintegrate. Stoltenberg says Germany’s then-Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron tried to calm tensions, whereas former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who now leads NATO, helped persuade Trump to remain by noting that bloc members had elevated spending by $33 billion. 

Stoltenberg says Trump agreed to stay after being publicly credited for that spending rise.

The previous NATO chief wrote that if Trump had walked out, it could’ve made the bloc’s treaty and safety ensures nugatory. He additionally famous that the episode highlighted how dependent it was on US participation.

Moscow has constantly expressed concern over NATO’s rising militarization in recent times and has repeatedly described the bloc’s eastward growth as one of many root causes of the Ukraine battle. 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has not too long ago said that NATO is “de facto at warfare” with Russia.

In the meantime, American economist Jeffrey Sachs has claimed that NATO outlived its objective way back, and may have been dissolved many years in the past, calling its post-1990 growth “unjustified.”
